You were the most broken person
I had ever met. I just didn’t know it.
I couldn’t know that behind that
Slow walk and sleepy smile
There was a creature wounded beyond
Any hope from my mending hands.
It’s like I reach out into the past
Arms flailing, you, the Eurydice to my
Orpheus.
It hurts to think about you
Even now, years after the fact.
The pain remains the same
My body and mind poised forward
But my shadow’s arms still reaching
back
Like there’s some way for me to fix
Those things that broke so deeply
Inside you, unraveling, remaining that way
With no fix for a heart permanently enrobed
in chaos.
You told me I made you feel calm inside.
If I only knew what that meant back then,
And not now, perhaps there would have been
A different ending to this story.
But I really know, deep down
In this flimsy little heart of mine
Everything would have always ended
The same exact way.
I always would have lost you.
I will never forgive myself
for that.
