It’s been a long day and
Right after I got home from work
I went straight to the store,
Picked up beef, pork, celery, carrots,
Onions, garlic, eggs,
And then I came right back home
Stepped into the kitchen, started
Cooking, knowing you had been
At school, studying, and at work
Making money so you could
Do things like pay rent and bills
And so I chopped and blended and
Kneaded feeling like the days aren’t
Moving quick enough
Those paychecks not big enough
But then I started humming a song
Maybe it was Autumn Leaves, thinking
Fall is coming soon, it’s September,
Then thoughts of apples, pumpkins, warm things
So before I knew it there was meatloaf
In the pan in the oven and the kitchen smelled
Terrific and I sat down waiting for the
Key to turn in the door
So you could see the food I made
While I was thinking about

You.
