This morning, on my way back
From the gym, I watched a sprinkler
Sway back and forth, spraying water
In the breeze.

Beneath the sprinkler
By the curb, was a little pool
of water.

Inside that pool of water
Were five sparrows, jumping
Up and down and having
A grand old time.

Ever see a bird taking a bath?

It’s mesmerizing to see
Something so tiny
Having so much fun.

I smiled and walked by. Later,
I found some crab apples
Just kind of sitting on the sidewalk.

There were lots.

Naturally, I kicked a bunch of them
Into the street.

I am closer to three decades on this planet
(rather than two)
And I still find so much joy
In things like sparrows taking baths
And kicking crab apples
Into the street.
