I realized yesterday
While riding on a train
Crammed full of people
That we never really get
Second chances.

What we truly get
Are first chances
Over and over
Again.

I don’t know why I suddenly
Thought of this, while
Listening to strangers
Hold cordial conversations,
Forced into a small space
Together in transit
From one place
To the next.

Life is a series
Of fuckups
So when something
Goes right
There’s always
A reason
To celebrate.

It didn’t matter
That I’d had a long day
And I wanted the week
To mercifully
Be over.

As I stepped
Off the train,
People parting,
I knew the next time
I stepped out
Things would be
A little better.
